On January 28, of this New Year Ontario had taken the record as the coldest place on earth.

The cold weather is reported to continue especially in the Eastern parts of Canada. A report from the Global News showed that aside from the groundhog’s predictions we may be in for the long haul with winter. Meteorologist Ross Hull delivered the news for Global following the Groundhog Day fun.

My Summary from the Global News Groundhog Day coverage (Done originally for class):

February second brought another Groundhog Day for 2019 with varied forecasts from the famous critters raising and dropping hopes.

Though Nova Scotia’s famous Shubenacadie Sam predicted a long winter, Ontario’s Wiarton Willy contradicted him with a prediction of early spring. Some have hopes for an early spring with the bitter cold of winter still lingering in our snowiest first months.

Canadian’s are being warned by Global News meteorologist Ross Hull, to expect a continued blast of winter however, going into April or May.

“Unfortunately, Arctic air doesn’t look at the calendar. So as many Canadians know, winter weather can last well into April even May across parts of the country.” Hull said as reported by Global News.

It’s can’t be exact to predict weather weeks in advance but Hull says there are patterns that can be followed to give a prediction. So far it is predicted that Eastern Canada along with the Prairies is in for cold weather through to March. Hull did add that in contrast the Western parts of Canada may be experiencing some warm of spring earlier.

Tradition is that if a groundhog sees their shadow on Groundhog Day it means that the colder weather will continue for six more weeks. If they do not then it calls for spring coming soon. Though the human weather casters say that so far, the groundhog’s predictions haven’t fared so well against reality.

The head nature interpreter at the wildlife park which is home to Sam, says that regardless of the “hit-or-mostly-miss nature of these forecasts” she still feels it’s important to keep up tradition for Canadians. As further reported by Global.

While the tradition carries on, Feb. 2 allows for some fun and sparks of hope for the months ahead.

So it appears that Canada will have some division in the coming months where weather is considered. Canada has already experienced one of its snowiest months in January with mounds of white piling up. Around Ottawa, the efforts for snow removal have been consistent with teams of tractors shoveling snow around in clumps of black and white. Slush has coated the streets and ice paves the way for residential sidewalks.

As of today, February 7, 2019 there are reports for cold temperatures and warnings for freezing drizzle, calling for more sheets of ice to come raining down. Based from Global and other reports it seems spring still isn’t in reach quite yet.
