Kitchissippi Heart

(A small piece I did during my first semester for class. Still learning along the way!)

Kitchissippi is a long withstanding community but definitely not forgotten.

For Alison Goss it has been a cozy home for 25 years now. First emigrating from South Africa she left the quickly becoming hazardous environment of home for a new start. “We came for a safer place for our kids to grow up and it certainly has been.” She said.

Goss came to appreciate the homely community and the history of the territory, visiting her usual coffee shop regularly. “It’s familiar, it feels like home, I recognize a lot of the people.” She said “It gives me a sense of history and continuity which I value.”

Most of the buildings are older which has had its ups and downs. Though Goss mentions that there has been considerable work done to fix the streets there are still some changes that could be made. With the area being mixed living the expense can rise and has even seen people moving out. To Goss she has her home, a house that’s nearly 80 years old rich with character that makes it unique.

Piper Aveling, a manger for a local pet shop shares the same feelings of warmth for the familiar area. “It’s very local, there’s always events going on, everyone’s very into community events and keeping everything local.” She said when asked about her favourite part of living in Kitchissippi.

The general feeling of Kitchissippi definitely shines with community. The still bustling area is filled with friendly faces and little shops everyone’s come to know and love.
